2013-14 Term 3 Third Year Project 10 – Design Elective

Year3Term3.047

Year3Term3.055

In the third year elective each student has to define and write their own brief:

Alex Michie – The topic of “dementia” is particular to me because my Grandma suffered from the illness for many years before she passed away in 2006. I was much younger at the time but can recall many aspects of her life which became difficult. She never lived to see smartphones reach the tipping point and tablets thereafter. I believe technology has the power to considerably enhance somebody’s life, given the right design and strategy, and with it’s aid continue to live independently at home for longer.

This project is students’ first foray into the world of Unity to create a novel aesthetic experience through the creation of a simple 3d navigable abstract environment. Students are encouraged to create a compelling  multidimensional environment with no pretence towards photorealism and not restrict their environment to the current ‘visual norm’.

This project introduces procedural thinking and creative coding practice. Students are asked to develop a series of 3 engaging procedural visual artworks using Processing considering the following questions: What are the aesthetics of computation? How do we generate images using procedural methods within the computer? Processing allows creative people to engage with code and develop new ways of imaging. Using this software students can explore this uncharted world.
